I had just dropped my daughter off for a day of acrobatics, circus tricks and various contortions. On my way I out I passed a nice little café which I hadn’t tried before – and hey, it was coffee time!
As I had never patronised this particular establishment before I questioned the barista as to the procedures of purchasing a coffee, she informed me in her friendly manner that I order at the counter. I stayed at the counter and waited for someone to serve me. Meanwhile, a very important man, according to his own ego, was following the heavily laden waitress barking his order at her. The lovely girl responded along the lines of “I won’t remember, please order at the counter” – a fair response I thought to the very important man’s demands. The very important man then responded to the girl “You will remember”, taken aback, the waitress dropped what she was doing (not literally) and attended to the very important man, despite knowing that I was clearly waiting appropriately for her service. She served the very important man and then apologised to me (which she did not need to, however the very important man owed the waitress and myself an apology at this time) before taking my order. Whilst this exchange was taking place the very important man approached the counter and without even a hint of an excuse me, simply barked at the waitress demanding his coffee in a take away cup. With her teeth gritted, the waitress politely acknowledged the very important man and then continued on in her friendly manner to complete our transaction. I am left to question what goes on in the mind of this very important man? Does he think that just because I am dressed in my Kmart jumpsuit that I am not as important as he is? Does he think that because the waitress is in a serving role he doesn’t need to use his manners? Does the very important man think that because he is wearing a collar he is more important than anyone else in the establishment? Sadly, I think the very important man was just so arrogant that he didn’t even see his behaviour as rude or abrupt. This behaviour displayed by the very important man could have ruined my whole coffee experience if I chose to let it, instead I realised that this very important man was no more important than anyone else, and in fact, he lacked not only manners, but also sophistication and he was quite simply an unpleasant man.
