So, I should be writing a 1000 word assignment for my studies, which in reality is not that hard. One thousand words, easy…… I just need to get started.
Everywhere in life we are surrounded by numbers, it brings order to our lives, it allows us to know where we have to be and when we have to be there. Doctors and nurses ask us to rate our pain on a scale of 1 to 10, traffic lights count down how long we have left to cross the road, we listen to a particular number on the radio waves. Students are given scores on their school work.
In 4 hours the children will be home from school, at 4 o’clock we have to leave for AFL, I have to travel 60 kilometers an hour to get there on time, it will take 25 minutes. Two 20 minute halves will be played, half time will be 5 minutes. The players will be wearing numbers on their backs, there will be 18 players for each team, 3 umpires, there will be 2 adults scoring. The temperature will drop to around 18 degrees and on the return journey I will have the car heater on level 1.
There are 12 months in a year, 52 weeks in a year, 365 days (except for leap years) in a year and 525,600 minutes in a year. There is an old song from the soundtrack from ‘Rent’ that asks how do these moments get measured. It goes on to say that perhaps you could measure these moments in laughter, cups of coffee, daylight, or sunsets, rather than in numbers. The real meaning of the song is about love and how can we measure our love for each other. Is it in bridges we burn, times that we cry, lessons we learn? No. It is in love, and how we must remember that love is a gift for us to spread and that we can measure our lives in love.
It discusses love within seasons, no matter where you are in your life journey you still have seasons of love, it might be parental and / or sibling love, it might be your first true love, you might be in the broken love season. For many of us lucky ones we marry our true loves and settle into a different season of love, it’s not filled with the passion and excitement it once was, but it may be more like a warm blanket that wraps around us comfortably.
Unfortunately some people will never get to experience true, unquestionable, unconditional love. We never really know what journey others are on, therefore it is even more important to show others compassion and caring, which equal love.
